Fear of Exams: How to Instill Calmness and Confidence in Your Child Before the Test

Exam Morning… A Household Emergency!

Your child complains of a stomach ache, their hands are trembling, their face turns pale, and they say: “Mom, I feel like I’ve forgotten everything!”

This scene repeats with thousands of students—it’s what we call Exam Phobia.

The problem is, this fear isn’t just “silly”—it’s real, and it can make even top students score low, not because they don’t understand, but because stress creates a barrier between them and the knowledge in their minds.

At Talead Academy, we see mental preparation as equally important as studying. That’s why we’ve put together golden tips to help you navigate this period calmly and safely:

1. You are the “thermometer” at home

The first and most important rule: Parents’ stress = student’s collapse.

Kids are extremely perceptive—they pick up on your emotions instantly. If a parent panics, yells: “Study, or you’ll fail us!”, the child feels the exam is a “life-or-death” situation, multiplying their pressure.

Tip: Stay calm and smile. Your home should be a haven of peace during exams. Let them feel that it’s just a measure of their level, not the end of the world.

2. A “magic” phrase to ease their mind

Instead of saying: “We need full marks” or “Don’t make a single mistake” (perfection is God’s domain, and such phrases add extreme pressure),

Say: “Do your best, and we’re proud of you no matter the result.”

This simple phrase removes a mountain of worry from their shoulders. When your child knows your love and support are unconditional, they approach the exam relaxed—and often perform better.

3. Avoid last-minute group reviews

One of the biggest mistakes is standing at the school gate reviewing with friends: “Did you memorize that explanation? Do you know how to solve this problem?”

These last-minute questions cause distraction and panic, making the student doubt even what they know well.

Teach them: “Close the book before the exam. Don’t listen to anyone else. You studied well—trust yourself and rely on God.”

4. Smart handling of the exam paper

Teach them a tactical approach to manage the exam efficiently:

  • Start with the easy questions: Solve what you know immediately to secure marks and boost confidence.
  • Difficult questions: Don’t panic or get stuck. Mark it, move on, and return to it later with a calm mind.
  • Breathing: If your mind “goes blank,” put down the pen, take three deep breaths, and your brain will regain focus. You’ll remember the answers, God willing.
